Michael Birdsell is the founding member of Birdsell Grant LLP. He earned his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary in 1977 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta in 1980. He was called to Bar in 1981 and in 1984 he founded the firm that would soon become Birdsell Grant LLP, when his Law School classmate Alastair Grant joined him as a partner. Mike was a partner for 30 years and became Counsel to the firm in 2015, providing guidance and support to the lawyers of Birdsell Grant.

In 2024 he retired from active practice. Over the course of 40 years of service to the firm’s clients and to various community, industry and service groups his contributions were noted by several honours, including appointment as Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel) in 2012 and medals recognizing community service awarded on the 125th anniversary of Canada’s confederation (1992), and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. His retirement is being spent with a book, a club, a hedge trimmer or an airplane ticket in his hands.
